Alexander Technique
Beginning with the premise that we humans have potential for an expansive range of movement and qualities of being, the Alexander Technique maps a neuromuscular process by which we can undo habitual modes of thinking, and instead make conscious choices that create the conditions for change to emerge. I balance this perspective with valuing and fostering our felt sense of ourselves, from within. Though Alexander Technique teachers are sometimes known as the “posture people”, my approach is less about refining how you sit and more about embodied awareness in its many qualities, and bringing this dynamism to any activity.
Complimentary to the classical Alexander Technique work, I bring to lessons and classes my interest in developmental movement, and I find that many adults can benefit from exploration of some of our earliest movement patterns, drawing from our time before birth and through the first year of life. How we each have learned to move has been informed by and interwoven with many systems beyond the neuromuscular, and lessons and classes open space and time for us to get curious about how we have learned to move, and how we might move. This perspective is greatly influenced by my work in Body-Mind Centering ® as an Infant Developmental Movement Educator.

The Alexander Technique is suitable for adults at any age or fitness level looking to participate in their own well-being. Some folks, like actors, musicians, dancers, singers and athletes, come wanting to optimize their performance. Others seek help with their meditation posture, or how to better sit to work at their computer, or just want some space to focus on themselves. The Alexander Technique can also be a complimentary part of a plan for folks recovering from injury or otherwise living with chronic pain or anxiety. Many folks find significant relief through release of excess tension, or from a more connected, organized, and supported tone in your daily movement. I don’t claim to heal anyone, however folks do frequently report feeling much better when they leave than when they arrived.

Typically, a lesson starts with some attention to everyday movement such as sitting, standing, walking, and breathing. I use both dialogue and gentle hands-on guidance to help you experience shifts in balance and coordination. We take time to work with particular activities that you’re interested in exploring, such as using your voice, meditation posture, or plié à la seconde. Lessons also include an assisted lie down, face up on a massage table or a mat on the floor. With hands-on guidance, students have time and space to develop and integrate the new patterns we’ve explored. Folks often experience greater ease, coordination, freedom and direction. Folks leave a lesson with tools for developing their own process of awareness.

Nope! I will help you identify and experience how your own participation in how you think and move might contribute to your overall well-being. There are many other folks you can see who can help diagnose your medical or other issues. This is also not Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Osteopathy, Craniosacral Biodynamic Therapy, massage, or Reiki. (Though I do have some experience in all of these modalities, I am not certified in any of them and do not practice them in session!)

Start with one lesson and see how you feel. I recommend that folks new to the Alexander Technique plan to do weekly one-on-one lessons for about 6 weeks. For some folks, that sufficiently sets them off on their own path! Others chose to continue weekly, or have periodic check-ins.
