about Rebecca
Rebecca Brooks, IDME, RSME, m.AmSAT
I’m a movement educator, dance artist, and parent working at the intersections of creative practice, somatics, pedagogy, and caregiving. My work is guided by a deep curiosity about how we move—and how we learn through movement—at every stage of life. I believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and curious in their bodies. In group classes (Alexander Technique, Somatics for Movers, Moving Babies) and private sessions (Alexander Technique, Infant Developmental Movement), I invite folks into deeper connection through embodied learning, where principles become practice. I offer in-person classes and sessions in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
I’m a certified Alexander Technique teacher (AmSAT) and an Infant Developmental Movement Educator, certified through the School for Body-Mind Centering®. I hold an MFA in Dance from Bennington College, where I was a Teaching Fellow after having been a guest faculty member. I’ve been teaching private Alexander Technique sessions since 2009 and spent five years on faculty at the Balance Arts Center, where I also trained teachers. I’ve led workshops at schools and organizations across the U.S., and served on the faculty at Movement Research from 2010–2015, returning again in 2025. My approach is shaped by a wide range of somatic practices—including Ideokinesis, yoga, Pilates, Qi Gong, Authentic Movement, and improvisation—as well as the embodied learning that comes from raising my two children, born in 2015 and 2019.
Since 2003, I’ve been based in New York City, working across the dance field as a teacher, performer, maker, dramaturg, producer, curator, and advocate. My own performance work has been presented throughout NYC and beyond, at venues including Danspace Project, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Pieter, Roulette, NADA New York, Not Festival, Dance Films Association, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, La MaMa, Dixon Place, CATCH, and AUNTS. As a performer, I’ve worked with artists such as Marina Abramović, luciana achugar, Walter Dundervill, Maria Hassabi, Katy Pyle, Susan Rethorst, robbinschilds, and Kathy Westwater, and I’ve worked as a performance advisor for Milka Djordjevich. Since 2006, I’ve collaborated closely with Heather Kravas as a performer, performance advisor, and somatic dramaturg. I am also a co-founder of the shape-shifting entity AUNTS and co-curated two festivals at Movement Research.
I live in Brooklyn with my wife and our two children.
